There is something rather special about receiving a Christmas card that has been made by hand. The tiny variations in the ink, the texture of the print and the knowledge that somebody created it especially for you make it feel far more personal than anything picked from a supermarket shelf.
This Christmas, why not take that thought one step further and print your own?
Shop bought cards are convenient, but handmade cards tell a story. Perhaps your design features a winter hare, a little Shropshire landscape, a sprig of holly or a beautifully simple Christmas tree. Whatever you choose, your finished cards will be completely your own.
Lino printing is particularly well suited to festive designs. Its strong shapes and characterful marks can turn even a simple sketch into a striking print. You do not need to create an intricate illustration to get a lovely result.
Beginner friendly ideas include a snowy cottage beneath the stars, holly or winter foliage, a robin or stag, Christmas trees, wrapped presents, snowflakes and simple patterns. You could also create a favourite local landscape in winter.
The same design can be printed several times, but each card will have its own subtle differences. That is part of the charm.
You do not need to be.
Bold and simple ideas often produce the best lino prints. During our Lino Cut and Print Christmas Cards workshop, we will help you develop a design that works well with the technique. Inspiration will be available on the night, so it is absolutely fine to arrive without a finished idea.
You will be guided through each stage, from transferring your design and safely carving the lino to applying the ink and making your first print. The session is suitable for complete beginners as well as anyone who has tried lino printing before and would enjoy a festive evening of making.
During the workshop, you will design and carve your own reusable lino block before printing a small set of approximately 8 to 10 Christmas cards.
You will also take your carved block home, so your festive printmaking does not have to stop when the workshop ends. With some ink and a roller, you can continue producing cards, gift tags or even your own printed wrapping paper.
All the materials and tools you need are provided, along with step by step tuition. There will also be tea, coffee and festive treats to keep the creativity flowing.
Making your own cards is a lovely way to slow down during a busy season. Instead of ordering another multipack, you will spend an evening learning a traditional craft and creating something personal for the people you care about.
Your recipients may eventually recycle their shop bought cards, but a handmade print has a habit of being kept. It can be framed, displayed again next Christmas or simply treasured as a reminder that somebody took the time to make it.
Our Lino Cut and Print Christmas Cards workshops take place from 6pm to 9pm at the Mustard and Gray Studio in Condover.
Upcoming dates are Wednesday 11 November 2026 and Wednesday 25 November 2026.
Places cost £35 per person, with all tools and materials included. The workshop is designed for adults because sharp carving tools are used.
Whether you come by yourself or bring a friend for a creative Christmas catch up, you will leave with new skills, your reusable lino block and a set of cards ready to send.
