A beautiful lampshade can transform a room — but like any handcrafted piece, it rewards a little care. Here's how to keep yours looking its best for years to come.
The simplest thing you can do is dust your lampshade regularly. Use a soft, dry cloth or a clean, dry paintbrush to gently sweep away dust from the surface. Work from top to bottom in light strokes. For fabric shades, a lint roller or the soft brush attachment on your vacuum (on the lowest setting) works well.
Little and often is the key — dust that builds up over time is harder to shift without risking damage to the surface.
If you notice a mark, act quickly. For most of our handmade lampshades, a barely damp cloth with a tiny amount of mild soap is sufficient for light marks. Always test on an inconspicuous area first, and never saturate the shade with water.
Avoid harsh cleaning products, abrasive cloths, or anything solvent-based — these can lift the printed design or damage the lining.
Make sure your lampshade is fitted with the correct bulb wattage — check the label inside the shade or the product listing. Excess heat from an oversized bulb can cause discolouration or warping over time. We recommend LED bulbs, which run cooler and are kinder to the shade and the environment.
Keep your lampshade away from direct sunlight where possible. Prolonged UV exposure can fade even the most vibrant printed designs.
If you're storing a lampshade, keep it upright in a cool, dry place. Avoid stacking anything on top of it, and wrap it loosely in acid-free tissue paper to protect the surface. Never store in a damp environment — moisture is the enemy of a good shade.
Even with the best care, lampshades don't last forever. If the lining has yellowed significantly, the frame has warped, or the printed design has faded beyond your liking, it might be time for a fresh one.
